In the dynamic world of product development, teams often grapple with a myriad of challenges that can hinder their progress and impact the quality of their outcomes. From misaligned product vision to inefficient processes, these obstacles can be daunting.
Enter PRODEV, a comprehensive maturity assessment designed by Symplicit (an HCLTech company) to provide a holistic snapshot of an organisation’s product development maturity. This model not only identifies current maturity levels but also offers a clear pathway to achieving target state maturity, ultimately leading to better product outcomes.

The challenges in product development.
Product development teams face several common challenges:
- Lack of Clarity and Vision: Without a clear design vision and roadmap, teams can struggle to align their efforts, leading to fragmented and inconsistent product experiences.
- Inadequate Use of Data: Failing to leverage customer and market data effectively can hinder the validation of concepts and the refinement of features.
- Inconsistent Design Standards: Without a consistent design system and high accessibility standards, the user experience can suffer.
- Inefficient Processes: Poorly defined processes and governance structures can result in inefficiencies, delays, and a lack of accountability.
- Communication Barriers: Ineffective communication and collaboration across teams can lead to misunderstandings and misaligned goals.
How PRODEV unearths challenges and provides clarity.
PRODEV addresses these challenges through its structured assessment framework, which measures maturity across two key dimensions: Product Clarity (PCx) and Operational Competency (OCx).
- Product Clarity (PCx):
- Design Vision: PRODEV assesses how effectively an organisation uses data to inform its design vision and validate concepts with users. This includes evaluating the clarity of experience metrics and the articulation of the design vision by product leaders.
- Product Roadmap: The model evaluates the completeness and visibility of the product roadmap, as well as the effectiveness of feature refinement and prioritisation processes.
- Operational Competency (OCx):
- Design Foundations: PRODEV examines the consistency of the design system, information architecture, and accessibility standards. It also looks at the effectiveness of continuous user research in informing decision-making.
- Ways of Working: The model reviews the governance structure, processes, and communication tools to ensure they support efficient and effective collaboration.
The four levels of product development maturity.
PRODEV categorises organisations (or teams, depending on the survey distribution chosen) into four maturity levels based on their PCx and OCx scores:
- Explorers: Low maturity, early in their product transformation journey.
- Visionaries: Strong in product clarity but need to invest in scaling operations.
- Scalers: Strong in operational competency but need to enhance product clarity.
- Leaders: High maturity in both dimensions, leading in product clarity and operational competence.
The path to better product outcomes.
By providing a detailed analysis of an organisation’s maturity profile, PRODEV helps teams identify specific areas for improvement. This clarity enables more informed decisions about future operating models and hiring strategies, ultimately leading to better product outcomes. Organisations with mature product operating models have been shown to offer significantly greater returns to shareholders, highlighting the tangible benefits of investing in product development maturity.
As we launch the PRODEV product maturity model, we invite organisations to embark on this journey towards enhanced product development. By leveraging the insights provided by PRODEV, teams can overcome their challenges, align their efforts, and achieve their product goals with greater efficiency and effectiveness.
